Our heritage a big deal!
THE Kindergarten Department at Sts Peter & Paul Preparatory School put on a show in celebration of Heroes’ Day that took the children on a journey through Jamaica’s past, while impressing parents.
Using the theme See it, Know it, Live it: Our Heritage a Big Deal, they created a pictorial in time which depicted Christopher Columbus’s voyages to the Americas, British colonisation (old Jamaica) and Independent Jamaica (new Jamaica) with the national heroes and heroine and other Jamaica trailblazers.
The event was spearheaded by superviors Suzanne Wellington and Beverly Prince.
All artwork was completed by students ranging from age 2 1/2-3 year olds (pre-kindergarten) and 4, 5 & 6-year-olds (lower & upper kindergarten students). The former worked on the Out of Many One People backdrop, while the latter did the piece on the heroes/heroine, symbols, endemic animals, and the old Jamaica craft that included Tanios, Spaniards, English, and other immigrants (Africans, Chinese and Indians).
“Students got a chance to visualise images of what Jamaica looked like in the past and it’s evolution into present day. They interacted with the food and artifacts, which elicited the ‘ooohs and aaahs’. It was an electric day for all involved in the process,” the school said.
