Election debate preparations in high gear — JDC
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC) today announced that it is moving “swiftly” towards the staging of election debates, ahead of the imminent general elections.
According to the JDC Chairman, Noel daCosta, “By all indications, including statements from senior officials, general elections are to be held shortly. As in the past three election cycles, the JDC has formally approached the political parties to outline its proposal for the staging of its usual debates.”
A release Tuesday from the JDC said now the norm ahead of elections, it has produced and presented debates for all national and local elections since 2002.
For general elections, according to the release, three debates are held covering social issues, economic Issues and a leaders’ debate between the contenders for the office of prime minister. These debates are traditionally staged in the period between nomination day and election day, the release said.
