Daley hoping to recover in time for South African tour
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) — West Indies Women all-rounder Shanel Daley says she is hoping to recover in time for the regional side’s tour of South Africa starting in January.
Daley has been sidelined with a knee injury she picked up when the West Indies Women visited Australia towards the end of last year.
“I am still recovering from my knee injury and trying to find a way back into the game, but hopefully I will soon make my return,” she told WICB Media.
“I am hoping that I can be fit enough to be considered for the next West Indies Women’s series, which will be the tour of South Africa in January/February.”
Daley’s knee injury has kept her out of action for the tour of Sri Lanka, the Women’s Regional Super50, and the Pakistan Women’s tour of the Caribbean which ended earlier last week.
“The last year has been very tough,” said Daley, a veteran of 64 One Day Internationals and 68 Twenty20 Internationals.
“I have tried to handle the challenge of being away from the game I love by not focusing too much on it and focus on my recovery and trying to increase my level of fitness.”
Daley, 26, appears eager to return to the side after their successful series against the Pakistanis.
Under new Captain Stafanie Taylor, the home team earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory in the four-match ODI series played in St Lucia to join Australia at the top of the ICC Women’s Championship table.
Taylor’s side then swept the T20 series 3-0, including a fascinating Super Over victory in the final match at the Grenada National Stadium last Sunday.
“I miss playing though. There is nothing like being out there and I am really looking forward to be back soon,” she said.
“I watch the ‘live’ webcasts of matches as long as they are available and I check online for updates on scores, so I am still aware of what’s happening.”
Daley has 71 wickets at 22.09 apiece in ODIs and 72 in T20s at an average of 15.45.
