Charlie Smith win but fail to advance
CHARLIE Smith High defeated Excelsior High 4-0 in their ISSA/Flow Manning Cup second-round game to go out in a blaze of glory at Constant Spring yesterday.
Despite the victory, Jonathan Grant High’s drawn result against Calabar ensured that the former advanced ahead of Charlie Smith High to the semi-final round.
Ronaldo McDonald with goals in the 29th and 87th minutes, along with goals from Kemar James in the 35th, and Zamario Sinclair in the 59th proved enough for Charlie Smith.
In the opening game of the evening’s double-header, 10-man Denham Town, who had already booked their place in the next round, went down 1-4 to Camperdown.
Camperdown got their goals from Kevin Clarke (26th and 64th), Aruna Anderson (49th) and Tajay Brown (90th+2), while Saquan Black replied for Denham Town in minute 61.
Jerome Waite, head coach of Charlie Smith High, said that he was pleased with the performance of his young team as he “must give them credit despite their inexperience for a pleasing performance even after being affected by the score elsewhere. From the final score you can see that they never shirked their responsibility to play good football to the very end and that for me is a very good sign.”
Baris Johnson, his Excelsior High counterpart, said: “We came pretty much to win the game, score some goals and try to maximise our chances. All in all we wanted to get a positive result, but it did not work for us. The energy level just seemed to fall off probably because of the score that came in from elsewhere. That could have had an effect on their play.”
