Garvey Maceo gets skills & empowerment centre
STUDENTS and faculty of Garvey Maceo High School and the surrounding community in Clarendon are celebrating the launch of a project for the establishment of the Garvey Maceo Skills and Empowerment Centre.
The centre, a collaborative effort of the High Commission for Trinidad & Tobago in Jamaica, Massy Distribution (Jamaica) Ltd, and the school, will be housed in a building on the school compound which has remained unused for over 30 years.
With a substantial financial commitment from Massy and plans by architects Leighton Hamilton Associates, the facility is now being renovated and retrofitted into a state-of-the-art skills training facility.
According to Rev Dr Iva Gloudon, former High Commissioner of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago to Jamaica who spearheaded the project, the centre will give students at Garvey Maceo hands-on experience and exposure to current trends and technology in agriculture.
“They will develop their own brand in several areas, form their own cooperative, to conducting business and making future decisions about where to invest their dividends,” she said.
The hands-on training at the school will be supported by theoretical classes and certifications, Gloudon said.
The project is being supported by the Ministry
of Education, HEART Trust/NTA and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture .
