Reggae Girlz suffer 1-2 loss to T&T in CONCACAF qualifiers
COUVA, Trinidad and Tobago – Jamaica’s Senior Reggae Girlz crashed 1-2 in extra time to arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago at the Ato Boldon Stadium and will enter into a playoff with Guyana for a spot in the CONCACAF round of the Olympics Qualifier on Friday.
Jodi Ann McGregor scored from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time after captain Christine Exeter was fouled in the box by Trinidad goalkeeper Kamika Forbes.
But the home team responded as Dernelle Mascall pulled T&T levelled in the 62nd minute, turning in a left sided cross as the game ended 1-1 after normal time.
T&T’s Tasha St Louis won the game in the first minute of extra time, out muscling two Jamaican defenders and fired home in the 91st minute. Only seconds earlier, Jamaica’s Venicia Reid failed to score with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Earlier Puerto Rico edged Guyana 1-0 in extra time and will play TT for top spot in Caribbean Football Union (CFU).
Jamaica will have to beat Guyana on Friday for the third and final Caribbean spot to keep their hopes alive to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio Brazil next year.
Trinidad and Puerto Rico now joins USA, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala in the final round of which two teams will qualify for the Olympic Games.
