Sunday stroll Barbican make easy work of Waterhouse to retain KO crown
Kenesha Reid led the scoring for Barbican FC with a brace in the 58th and 60th minutes, but it was Rochelle Bryan who started the celebration when she fired home in the 28th minute, while Latoya Panton got the other goal in the 83rd.
The lone goal for Waterhouse FC came from Shavell Martin in the 80th minute.
Charles Edwards, coach of Barbican FC, said that he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“We came with a total game effort today (yesterday) and defensively we were playing well, and we switched out of that and into the attacking mood and I don’t think that Waterhouse FC were able to cope with that, hence the convincing victory,” Edwards told the
Jamaica Observer.
His opposite number, Xavier Gilbert, said that his team lost the edge.
“I think that we were too flat; we weren’t competitive in all departments here today (Sunday). We were also too opened up in the midfield as well, and eventually we lost the game,” Gilbert said.
Both teams started the game cautiously, but as the match progressed it was Barbican FC who took control and looked the more focused of the two.
The defending champions threatened the Waterhouse FC goal as early as the 15th minute when Reid skipped past three of Waterhouse FC’s defenders, but her powerful strike went over the crossbar.
Three minutes later, Reid was at it again when she fired at goal from 20 yards out, but Shaquille Laing, in goal for Waterhouse FC, was equal to the task and put the ball out for a corner.
The Barbican FC domination continued when Ashlee Sawyers cut across a defender in the 18-yard box, but her shot, which beat a struggling Laing, found the upright. Her teammate Tasheka Small failed to score from off the rebound in front of an empty goal in the 21st minute.
Dividends finally paid off for Barbican FC in the 28th minute when Bryan fired home a soft shot, which Laing made a meal of, and the loose ball rolled into the left side of the net to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead.
Waterhouse FC’s only chance at goal in the first half came in the 31st minute when Shavell Martin’s strike from 25 yards out went inches from Barbican FC’s left upright.
Barbican FC picked up where they left off in the first half, as the skilful Reid muscled her way between two Waterhouse defenders and slotted home easily in minute 58 to give the defending champions a 2-0 lead.
Reid then made it 3-0 two minutes later when her long, powerful shot from just outside of the box flew past Laing in the top left-hand corner of the net.
Waterhouse FC got a little inspiration from Martin when she headed home in the 80th minute.
However, Waterhouse FC’s celebration was cut short when central defender Panton received a beautiful through pass from Reid, who dismissed Laing in goal before rolling the ball over the line in the 83rd minute.
