Munro, Glenmuir top rural Under-16, Under-14 football
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Glenmuir High and Munro College will represent rural Jamaica today when they take on Corporate Area champions Kingston College in the final of the ISSA/Wata All Island Under-14 and Under-16 competitions, respectively.
Glenmuir High, from May Pen, Clarendon, edged Munro College 1 -0 in the Rural Area Under-14 final at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in Santa Cruz on Friday last.
However, Munro were celebrating after the Under-16 final, having beaten Cornwall College 2-1 in penalty kicks after the teams had finished 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
Kingston College won the Corporate Area double last week.
On Friday, Chrisvaughn Kirkpatrick, one of a set of triplets that started the game, scored the winner for Glenmuir to beat Munro College and take the Under-14 title.
Munro College got a last-minute, extra-time equaliser and went on to beat Cornwall College in a pulsating Under 16 final, the first since winning in 2009 and 2010 under Hopeton Gilchrist.
It was also Cornwall College’s second loss in the Rural Area Under-16 final in three years. They lost 0-1 in extra time to STETHS in 2013 at Manchester High.
After a goalless regulation 80 minutes where both teams came close to scoring several times, Cornwall College from Montego Bay took the lead early in the first period of extra time when Calvin Gardner converted a penalty kick.
With less than two minutes remaining in the second period, Munro earned a penalty kick, which Tavin Shaw put away to send the game to penalty kicks.
Munro College’s goalkeeper Akyn Davis came up big in the shoot-out, saving four kicks after conceding the first, to lead the school from Potsdam in Malvern, St Elizabeth to glory.
