Mandeville lawyer facing fraud charges
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Detectives attached to the Counter Terrorism Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) arrested and charged an attorney-at-Law for breaches of the Larceny Act on Monday, December 14.
He is 56-year-old Howard Lettman of Nevon Place in Mandeville, Manchester.
Reports are that in 2000, a woman retained the services of Lettman in order to purchase a property. It is alleged that the woman handed over J$11,600,000 for the purchase of the property, payment of stamp duties and other fees and taxes, as well as payment for his legal service.
A news release from the police’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) said Lettman reportedly paid over a portion of the money to the vendor, but failed to pay the necessary fees. As a result, the property was reportedly not transferred.
A report was then made to the C-TOC and an investigation was launched.
Lettman was consequently arrested and charged for fraudulent conversion and is scheduled to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 15, 2016.
According to the CCU release, Lettman is currently out on bail, which was granted in the sum of J$500,000.
