Excel Black adds twist to Only Girl
GERMANY, it seems, is where it’s at for getting that big reggae song. Just ask OMI and Chronixx.
Singjay Excel Black would not mind some of that Midas touch rubbing off on him. He teams with German-based DJ King Kenny on a remix of his song, Only Girl.
Excel Black produced the original version in late 2015, but DJ King Kenny recently added his sound.
“We met through a mutual friend an’ decided to do some work together. The song getting a lotta play in Europe an’ Zimbabwe,” he said.
The Trelawny-born Excel Black (real name Lebert Black) has been recording for 15 years. Some of his songs, such as
Vanity Love and Faith in You, have earned him a following in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Barbados, where he performs regularly.
Those songs were done for Vikings Productions, the company behind several of singer Romain Virgo’s hits.
Originally from Spaldings, Clarendon, DJ King Kenny operates as a sound system selector/booking agent out of Hannover, a city in northern Germany but is managed by Afterdark Entertainment in Montego Bay.
Singers OMI and Chronixx have benefited from working with German producers Felix Jaehn and Sillywalks Discotheque, respectively.
Jaehn’s remix of OMI’s Cheerleader was one of the biggest hits of 2015. The Sillywalks Discotheque-producedSmile Jamaica is arguably Chronixx’s finest moment.
After nearly 20 years in the music business, Excel Black is confident Only Girl can get him on international charts.
“It have the right flow an’ flavour. It have what it take to go far,” he said.
