Zion Hill Primary topped the Stanley Amritt United Friends of Highgate and Central District Association Prep and Primary School Football competition after defeating Highgate 2-0 to claim the championship trophy during the recent game at Richmond Community Centre.
The goals were scored by Dwight Christie in the 10th minute and Roshaune Robinson, who sealed the victory in the 38th minute.
Christie scored when his long-range shot from outside the penalty area beat Highgate’s custodian Devon Jones in the 10th minute. Highgate tried to get back on level terms, but suffered a further setback just before the game ended when Robinson fired home from close range.
In an earlier game, Bromley edged Carron Hall 1-0 with the lone goal being scored by Jadeen Gordon for the third-place spot.
Rev Seymour Hutchinson, chair of the committee, told the Jamaica Observer North East that the competition was born out of a need to honour Stanley Amritt, who is now 93 years old. He explained that Amritt, who was affectionately known as ‘Bobby Charlton’, used to play football for the parish.
“ He has contributed a lot to the communities in the parish and schools, and to sports in particular,” Hutchinson said.
He explained that 13 schools participated in this the second year of the competition. Last year’s champions Marlborough was knocked out early in the competition.
Olanzo Reid, coach of Zion Hill, was delighted at the victory.
“We came prepared knowing that Highgate is a tough team to beat. The boys worked hard, executed well and we got the results,” he said, adding, “the school and the community is happy and they were very supportive.”
