Brighter days for Hanover
GREEN ISLAND, Hanover — The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has embarked on a drive to have all non-functioning street lights in the parish of Hanover brought back into service.
Winston Bansie, JPS’s operations manager for Hanover, told the Jamaica Observer West on Tuesday that the drive which started last week is expected to end in February.
The project, he noted, entails repairing of defective lamps and replacement of bulbs.
Bansie also disclosed that repairs had started in the Hopewell, Chester Castle and Green Island divisions. He added that the project will commence in the Cauldwell division within another two weeks.
Following this, the work will start in the remaining divisions of Sandy Bay, Riverside and Lucea.
Just recently, former Lucea Mayor and Councillor for the Green Island Division, Shernet Haughton, told the Observer West that residents have expressed concerns about the lack of functioning street lamps in various sections of the division.
“When people go to them [JPS] and ask them about fixing those lights, they would say to them [residents], check with your councillor. And if we were the one fixing them, all the areas would be properly lit and we would not have street lights that are not working, because taxpayers’ money have to be paying for them,” Haughton said.
She added then that over 25 lights were not working, some from early 2015. She stressed that the matter had been brought to the attention of the JPS on numerous occasions.
