UWI add to Waterhouse miseries
Waterhouse continued to prop up the Red Stripe Premier League standing with their 21 points after going down 0-1 to UWI FC in a crucial third-round game at the UWI Mona Bowl on Sunday.
Kemar Cummings scored the all-important goal in minute 72 after Anthony Grant had outfoxed Waterhouse goalkeeper Akeem Chambers after luring him away from his goal and then flicking over his head to create the opportunity. The win helped UWI maintain their sixth place in the league after they were hammered 5-0 by Harbour View in their previous game.
UWI assistant coach Andrew Peart was pleased with the performance of his team. “This was one of our better games and Waterhouse helped along the way by missing a penalty in the first half. Still we were moving the ball around enough to create the chances that would have given us victory,” he said.
Waterhouse coach Paul Young’s miserable tenure continued and he found a series of reasons for Sunday’s loss.
“A number of our top players did not play well and the dry surface was not conducive to passing the ball around. We also missed a penalty in the first half, which did not help our second-half performance either,” said the former Jamaica striker.
In a drab first half where only half chances were created, Waterhouse passed up a golden opportunity to take the lead on the stroke of half-time from the penalty spot, but the usually reliable Weston Forrest failed to convert as goalkeeper Amal Knight guessed right and held on.
Earlier, UWI had two chances to go ahead, but on both occasions Anthony Grant failed to connect. Waterhouse themselves had at least two half chances, but failed to get close enough.
