Brit to spend 67 years in Grenadian prison for killing wife
St GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — A British national has been sentenced to 67 years in jail after he was found guilty of killing his wife and burying her in a shallow grave more than ten miles away from the scene of the crime.
Robert Clack was charged with non-capital murder in June 2014, but his sentence will start from the day of the judgement. He will be eligible for release in 2083.
His attorney Anselm Clouden said the sentence was very harsh.
“This sentence is usually high in terms of years,” he told the reporters after Judge Paula Gilford read out her judgement on Monday.
Admitting that the concealment of the body was in bad taste, Clouden said that the State’s main witness should have been charged because she assisted in concealing the body.
“She was the one who was more aggressive,” he said.
In June 2014, the body of Nixiann Downes-Clack was discovered in a shallow grave in Mt Moritz after she was reported as missing by her mother who was expecting her to visit the family.
An autopsy later revealed that she died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation by strangulation.
Clouden told the media that at the center of the altercation which resulted in the wife’s death was the fact the Clack had a mistress who was sleeping in the matrimonial bed.
“He had two women living in the same house,” said Clouden.
