The sprinters are out early
It has been a long time since racing fans have been blessed so early in the season by a non-trophy Open Allowance race with a good crop of sprinters in the line-up.
Such is the case tomorrow when seven horses face the starter in an Open Allowance event over six furlongs in what many pundits are seeing as an attempt by the various connections to earn early purse money with the ultimate aim of qualifying for the Diamond Mile. Only recently it was announced that entry in the Diamond Mile for 2016 will be based on year-to-date earnings and not lifetime earnings as it was in 2015.
The Complete Racing Guide does its analysis of what is sure to be quite a sprint.
CAMPESINO – Campesino faces the starter for the third time this year. On last going a mile he fought hard but could not beat the outstanding foreign filly Long Running Train. On his first outing on January 2, Campesino again came close when losing to arch-rival Poker Star. Campesino should be better off going six furlongs, and with his propensity not to give up the gallop in the straight has as good a chance as any. Watch him closely, probably his best chance of winning.
ROYAL ASSAULT – Has settled in his forte of sprinting and is the new ‘kid’ on the block racing in Open Allowance for the first time. Royal Assault was simply awesome when winning on last over five furlongs round. Still he might need to get acclimatised to a more formidable and seasoned set of horses, but as he is growing in stature and confidence it would not be surprising to see him in the winner’s enclosure.
RAGING PROSPECT – Not really in this one.
DIFFERENTGENERATION – Will not be a factor.
HOVER CRAFT – Consistently earns for his connections and may well do so again. Will be way behind the speedballs and will produce his best effort in the straight, but six furlongs is just too short. As hard-knocking as he is, this is simply too hot forHover Craft.
POTCHEEN – His last two races were mediocre at best. This was not thePotcheen racing fans have come to know and trust. He was not even visible in the Diamond Mile last December but with 63 days off and going fairly well in exercise, he can always spring a surprise. Will benefit from the riding services of Shane Ellis who rarely rides for trainer Harry Parsard. Potcheen has undoubted class, and many will be watching and waiting to see how well he will perform in this one.
PETE’SWILDONE – Not at his consistent best of late, and his run here will also be watched.
