WHO: No travel restrictions for Zika
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The World Health Organization (WHO) says it will not be issuing travel restrictions related to the Zika virus.
In a Twitter post a short while ago, the WHO said women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must decide the level of risk they wish to take with regards to the Zika virus and plan accordingly.
“In particular, they should: Be informed about Zika and other mosquito-transmitted diseases; protect themselves from mosquito bites; consult their doctor or local health authority of travelling in an area where Zika is present; mention their travel plans during their prenatal check-ups; and consult their healthcare provider for close monitoring of their pregnancy upon return from travel.”
The main concern for pregnant women is the link of Zika to microcephaly, a rare neurological condition in which a baby is born with a smaller than normal head.
Brazil, which is grappling with cases of microcephaly, and Colombia are the countries most affected by the mosquito-borne disease in the Americas. Cases have also been identified in Europe and there were reports earlier today that a case has been confirmed in China.
