Alana Bailey shines at JBA Junior Classic
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Alana Bailey was the toast of the 2016 Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) Junior Classic, winning the Under-19 Triple Crown at the Constant Spring Golf Club Racquet Complex on Monday night.
Bailey, unseeded in the Girls Singles event, defeated Iesha Gordon in an exciting three setter, 20-22, 21-14 and 21-19.
Bailey partnered with Esther Reynolds to defeat Taina Daley and Shezelle McTyson, the number two seeds in girls double, 21-12, 20-22 and 23-21. Her final title of the tournament was in mixed doubles with partner Shane Wilson, as they defeated NIcardo Ried and Iesha Gordon, 21-15 and 21-10.
Also winning three gold medals was Rihanna Rust. Rust won the Under-11 Girls Singles by defeating Makyala Hardware 21-6 and 21-4. She then won the Under-13 Girls Singles, beating Aliyah Bennett 21-3 and 21-4. Rust then partnered with Tijae Hinds in the Under-13 mixed doubles to defeat Keyon’dre McBean and Jade Ranger in straight sets 21-9 and 21-9.
Matthew Lee, the number one seed in the Boys Under-19 singles outclassed his opponent, Nicardo Reid 21-5 and 21-5, to take his first title. He then paired with Shane Wilson to defeat Ashane Newland and Justin Taylor in the Under-19 Boys Doubles 21-15 and 21-13.
In other results of the tournament, Taina Daley defeated Shezelle McTyson in the Under-17 Girls Singles event, 21-13 and 22-20. Winners of the Under-15 Boys Doubles, Marlon Hines and Adam Taylor, defeated number one seeds, Tijae Hinds and Zane Reid, 23-21 and 21-11; Zane Reid defeated Adam Taylor 21-12 and 21-13 in the Under 15 Boys Singles and in the Under-15 Girls Singles, Emily Reynolds defeated Nya Ramsay-Bryce 21-4 and 21-10.
In the Under-13 Boys Singles, Tijae Hinds, number two seed, defeated Andre Stewart, the number one seed, 21-12, 18-21 and 21-16. In the Under-11 events, Jordan Turner defeated Toshiro Jones, the number one seed, 21-8 and 21-11. Turner then partnered with Makyala Hardware to defeat Jones and Abigail Walker 21-8 and 21-9 in the Mixed Doubles. In the Under-11 Boys Doubles Nathan Lindo and Matthew Robinson defeated Jones and Bradley Case 21-14 and 21-11.
