Granville cop Western Confed mid-season title
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville FC will set their eyes on a third Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League title after beating Clark’s Town FC 1-0 in extra time the mid-season final played at Jarrett Park on Sunday.
Substitute Tennyson Jarrett scored the winner in the 92nd minute after coming on the field of play in the 71st minute to give the St James player their first title in the confederation competition since 2000 when they won all three trophies at stake that season.
Jarrett was transferred to Granville FC after representing Tomorrow’s People up to the January transfer window.
Granville will also go into the cross zone round starting later this weekend as the overall leaders, as they led Zone 1 with 25 points after the first two rounds- six points more than Montego Bay Boys Club and Clark’s Town — both on 19 points, with Wadadah FC and Petersfield FC on 18 points.
Sunday’s game failed to rise to the levels expected between two teams that were expected to go after goals and only a few scoring chances were created between the two.
Clark’s Town, who were losing back to back games for the first time in the season, had the best two chances to score in the first half, both chances coming in the first 12 minutes.
A header from Dwayne Brown from point blank range was saved by Granville FC’s goalkeeper Zavhia Hutchinson in the eighth minute.
Four minutes later, Devroy Campbell’s free kick from just outside the 18 -yard box, deflected off the Granville FC wall and Hutchinson was again called on to tip the ball for a corner.
There were even fewer scoring chances in the second half and Jarrett who replaced Demar Dohman in the 71st minute, latched onto a ball on the right side of the 18-yard area two minutes into the first period of the extra time and lashed it into the far corner past goalkeeper Duvaun Smith.
