#DecisionJa2016: Tufton predicts high voter turnout in St Catherine West Central
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Jamaica Labour Party candidate for St Catherine West Central Dr Christopher Tufton says all indicators are pointing to a 10 to 15 percentage increase in voter turnout in the constituency, up from the 44 per cent seen in the last election.
A confident-sounding Tufton said this increase can be attributed to the fact that the constituency wants to see a change in government as well as the fact that he ran a good campaign, despite having entered the race late. He noted that the constituents also have confidence in the quality of the candidate they have been given.
“The ability to get out the voters is due to the level of organisation on the ground,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Tufton expressed satisfaction that all the polling stations opened on time and that everything has been operating smoothly, even as he commended his election day workers.
Tufton is getting support from his senate colleague Arthur Williams, who said that he wants to see Tufton back in the lower house.
“He is a valuable asset to the party and I want to see him back in Parliament and as member of Parliament for the constituency,” Williams said.
Asked about his commitment to the party given the legal battle surrounding the Senate letter saga, Williams said while he might have had some past issues with the party, it is now all about what is best for the country.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about personality but what is the best for the country,” Williams said.
