ONLINE READERS’ COMMENT – St Mary South Eastern has a history, always close
Dear Editor
News now that following an official recount, Winston Green of the PNP has been declared the winner of the St Mary South Eastern seat after being declared the loser on Thursday after the preliminary count by nine votes reminds me of the 2007 general elections when the JLP’s Tarn Peralto was declared winner after a similar recount.
If memory serves me correct, the PNP’s Harry Douglas was declared the winner on the night of the election following the preliminary count.
Then after the official recount, Peralto won the seat by 34 votes.
At the time in 2007, it was explained by the election authorities that two sealed boxes which came from the voting of the security forces and Election Day workers had not been counted.
What is certain is that the votes this year will again be counted this time by a Resident Magistrate.
It can’t get any closer, a possible 32-31, at least we can better understand why the election authorities ensured that no election tie could arise, and changed from 60 constituencies to 63 after the close 2007 elections.
