TRINIDAD – Two more Zika cases confirmed
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Less than a month after the first case of the Zika virus was confirmed in Trinidad and Tobago, there are reports of two more, this time a mother and daughter.
A statement from the Ministry of Health yesterday said: “The Ministry notes that these two new cases are located in La Romaine near San Fernando and appear to have been locally acquired. This underscores the need for all citizens across the country to take steps to prevent infection of this disease. The Ministry of Health continues to urge citizens to take steps that will prevent the infection of themselves and their loved ones.”
The Ministry stated the confirmation of the cases were made following consultation with the Caribbean Public Health Agency.
This brings the total number of confirmed Zika cases in Trinidad to three.
On February 16, Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh told reporters the person who contracted the virus was a 61-year-old woman who had recently travelled to New Zealand.
There are, at this time, no confirmed cases in Tobago.
