Kellier retains St James Southern seat after magisterial recount
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The People’s National Party’s Derrick Kellier has retained his hold on the St James Southern seat following an intense four days of magisterial recount in the St James South magisterial recount.
Kellier won by 62 votes following the recount.
Kellier had obtained 6,278 votes in comparison to 6,216 votes for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Homer Davis.
The completion of the magisterial recount on Saturday went on despite an attempt by Davis’ legal team to halt the proceedings of the magisterial recount until the Supreme Court gave a ruling. The matter is currently being heard in Kingston.
This, as, news came late Friday afternoon that shortly after five the presiding Resident Magistrate, Ann Marie Lawrence Granger, was served with Supreme Court documents.
Davis’ attorney-at-law, Hugh Wildman, had stated that the Supreme Court hearing stems from Thursday’s decision by the Resident Magistrate to accept ballots which did not have the presiding officer’s initial and the date of the general election from the contentious polling division (PD) 31.
However, the magisterial recount continued Saturday in the Cambridge Resident Magistrate Court shortly after 9:00 am.
