Destin wins Tampa Bay Derby in record time
TAMPA, Florida (AP) — Destin won the US$350,000 Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday last, running 1 1/16 miles in the Kentucky Derby prep in a track and stakes-record 1:42.82 minutes.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, Destin beat Outwork by a length. Trainer Todd Pletcher trained the top two finishers in the Grade 2 race.
Destin was coming off a victory on February 13 at Tampa Bay in the Sam F Davis Stakes. The colt earned 50 Kentucky Derby-qualifying points, and Outwork got 20.
Favoured Brody’s Cause, the Breeders’ Cup Futurity winner, was seventh in the nine-horse field after being bumped at the start.
