There was no ‘mistake’ on Saturday
While it is always difficult to assess the true ability of a horse based on a run over the five straight course, the victory on Saturday last by the curiously named Big Mistake had many onlookers thinking about his competence.
Racing for the third time this season, after finishing both times without even showing a trace of ability, Big Mistake (Andre Powell), in the familiar pink and white silks of owner Elizabeth DaCosta , put away a field of maidens with disdain, winning by almost 12 lengths against what must be truly described as an ordinary lot of opponents.Dutchess Uriel (Linton Steadman) was second, with the battle-worn Guava Ground (Rayan Wilson) third. The winning time was 59.3 seconds.
From the off, Powell – drawn in the coveted outside position – put Big Mistake (He’stherealthing – Peccadillo) in front while moving over to the middle of the track.Big Mistake continued to race in front and turned the last two furlongs into a procession, moving further and further away.
While elated with the win – his second on the day – trainer Wayne DaCosta was very guarded with his comments.
“Yes, without doubt, I am very happy for the victory. It was a relatively good run by Big Mistake who showed commendable improvement on the exercise track coming into today’s (Saturday’s) race. The good thing is that he (Big Mistake) did not err today.
“Nothing really to blow a horn over, but let us see firstly how he comes out of the race and how he will develop. Only time can tell,” the champion trainer said.
