My Kingston – Aidan Jean-Marie
Welcome to Kingston. Is this your first visit?
It is my first visit to Kingston, but it will certainly not be my last.
What has been your most memorable meal in Kingston?
Great jerk chicken and rice at Scotchie’s, there was no breadfruit however, which I was very sad about.
What is your beverage of choice?
I have a weakness for a French Bordeaux.
What has been your most recent splurge?
My new Bic Mini Malibu surfboard.
What’s the one thing you miss the most and the one thing you wish would just go away?
I miss my grandmother who passed away many years ago. She inspired me a lot. I wish the war on each other and the war that is everywhere would just go away.
You’re in Kingston to scout fresh faces from the Saint International Fashion Face of the Caribbean competition. What do you think of the crop of models presented last Saturday?
It was inspiring to meet such a great collective of young adults full of ambition. It was not just ambition for modelling but that was inclusive of education, arts, sport. Jamaica should be very proud and I am very proud being a member of the West Indies. I thought the cadre was exceptionally high and I think that was down to Saint International.
What is your favourite place in St Lucia, and how do you connect that place to Kingston?
There will always be a couple of places that evoke vivid memories for me of St Lucia — one is the food market and the other is when my grandmother cooked in the kitchen. It’s about smells. That’s where my love of food and cooking began.
On arrival into Kingston a few days ago, we passed the stadium where the track and field championships was taking place and the windows were rolled down. Passing all the food stalls transported me right back to those days as a child standing in my grandmother’s kitchen.
What’s the one thing you purchased in Kingston that you will either take home with you or tell everyone about?
Got to be the jerk chicken.

Cooked by Michael Pollan.
What’s the one take-away from the book?
Cooking is a fundamental part of human activity that is vital to our survival. It’s a human activity that brings us closer. It’s about connecting with nature in its purest form.

Which cologne are you splashing?
I prefer body oils like Cowshed.
Share one completely embarrassing secret about yourself that you’ve never shared with anyone.
Trying to think… there was one occasion I was competing in the 110-metre hurdles and I clipped a hurdle and fell. That was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life.
When was the last time you cried, and conversely, the last time you had a hearty laugh?
Last time I cried was on the plane here watching Christopher Nolan’s
Interstellar.
And laughter was watching Chris Tucker stand-up, which was so funny I nearly wet myself!
What would be your financial advice to young models?
Save everything that you earn! Save, save, save!
What is your life philosophy?
It’s very simple. As human beings we have a need for positive love. It’s important to make everyone feel loved and appreciated in all aspects of what we do. The world would be a much better place if we exercised these simple rules of existence.
