Granville FC, Wadadah FC bank on home field advantage in Western Confed semi-finals
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Mid-season champions Granville FC and former winners Wadadah FC will hope home field advantage can give them the edge in today’s first leg semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Federation Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League at Jarrett Park starting at 1:30 pm.
Granville FC, who also topped the regular season points table, will hope to stay on course for the double when they take on first-time semi-finalists Beaches Negril in the second game after former winners Wadadah FC and Sandals Whitehouse meet in the opening game.
It will be the second straight season that Wadadah and Sandals Whitehouse will be meeting at the semi-final stage with Wadadah FC winning last year.
The return legs are set for next Sunday at Frome with the winners on aggregate qualifying for the final set for May 1.
The champions will play off against the other three Confederation champions for two promotion places to next season’s Red Stripe Premier League.
Granville FC will have an advantage after they beat Beaches Negril 3-1 when they met in a third-round game, while Wadadah FC beat Sandals Whitehouse 2-1 in the first round.
After snapping Granville FC’s 14-game unbeaten run, beating them 4-1 in the final round of matches last week, Sandals Whitehouse are on a roll and will hope to carry over their momentum into the semi-finals.
The Aaron Lawrence-coached team won five games and drew the other, scoring 17 of their 30 goals in the process while conceding just three, the best record in the third round.
Akeem Shackleford, who joined the team in January, ended up as the top scorer with 13 goals and will lead the Sandals Whitehouse attack with Ron Daley and Delroy Davis.
Wadadah FC ended the regular season with a big 7-0 victory over Petersfield, who came into the game with hopes of making a run at the semi-finals.
Kemiro James, who transferred to Wadadah FC in January, appeared to have rediscovered his scoring boots as he scored eight times to lead the team and along with Robert Lewis and Okeefe Brown will carry the fight to Sandals Whitehouse.
Granville FC had the best defensive record in the competition conceding just nine goals, including the four against Sandals last week and this could be a challenge for Beaches Negril despite scoring 13 goals in the third round.
Games involving Granville FC are not known to produce lots of goals, but over the last two seasons, they have won 27 games, the most by any team.
Oneil Pringle leads the team’s scoring from midfield with eight, while three players have two each as the next best output.
Kemar Dawkins has been one of the bright spots on the Beaches Negril team, finishing second in the goals race with 10 strikes, and he will be needed today if they are to upset Granville FC.
