St Catherine teams lead the way in South Central Super League
HAYES, Clarendon — The race for places in the semi-finals of the Charley’s JB Rum/ South Central Confederation Super League remains open, with all eight teams still very much alive and two sets of preliminary round games remaining.
While the St Catherine pair of Dunbeholden FC and Tru-Juice FC are now the leaders of their respective groups, it was the St Elizabeth duo of St Bess FC and Black Star FC who stole the show with surprise victories in midweek.
St Bess were the most impressive, handing Zone Two leaders Dunbeholden (nine points) their first defeat of the campaign. The Lacovia-based side pulled off a 2-1 victory on the road, with Shaniel James (2nd minute) and Frederick Thompson (11th minute) getting the goals.
They are now three points adrift of top spot and four clear of joint third-placed teams Downs FC and New Bowens FC, who drew 2-2 in Clarendon.
Black Star also handed Jamalco their loss in Zone One, edging them 1-0 courtesy of a 42nd-minute penalty from Davian Ash at the Black River Community Centre.
The result means Jamalco, with seven points, were relegated to second in the group. They were replaced by Tru-Juice at the top following the St Catherine-based side’s 2-1 win over Ricam Academy at Brooks Park.
Gawain Smith got both goals for Tru-Juice, scoring in the 24th and 45th minutes to help his team earn their ninth point from four games.
Nicholas Collins, in the 34th, scored the consolation for Ricam, who were suffering their third successive defeat.
Despite this run of defeat, Ricam remain in the semi-final hunt with three points, four adrift of second-placed team Jamalco. Black Star are third with four points.
