Miss Teen Jamaica sashing tonight
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Eighteen young women, aged between 13 and 18- years-old, will be sashed this evening as finalists in the Miss Teen Jamaica contest.
The event starts at 7:00 pm inside the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston and marks the begining of the 35th anniversary of the contest, which was started by the late newspaper lifestyle columnist Janet Sinclair through her J’Sin Promotions.
Sinclair died from a heart condition in September last year, after 40 years of promoting similar events including the Mini Miss Jamaica and Miss Jamaica Grandmother contests. Her daughter, Peta-Gaye Foster, now heads J’Sin Promotions, promoter of the events.
The contest is open to high school girls aged 13 to 18. Top prizes include $1 million worth of scholarships to the University of College of the Caribbean (UCC) in New Kingston. The winner receives a $500,000 UCC scholarship, plus a trip to the United States from the promoters. The first runner up is awarded a $300,000 scholarship and the second runner-up a $200,000 scholarship.
