UWI Banking League celebrates year of success
With the school year coming to a close, The UWI Banking League ended their year of activities last Saturday with a glitzy and stylish Induction and Awards Ceremony inside the headquarters of The National Commercial Bank (NCB).
The ceremony featured some of the financial sector’s major players, including guest speaker Nigel Holness, head of CIBC First Caribbean Bank and President of the Jamaica Bankers Association, Marcia Reid-Grant, Assistant Senior General Manager, Retail Banking Division at NCB and Darlene Jones, Director at Jamaica Institute of Financial Services (JIFS). Also present was Mr Michael Williams, Deputy Executive Director of the Mona School of Business and Management.
In a move that was unprecedented by clubs and societies based at the UWI Mona campus, the executive at the Banking League decided to present an “Academy Awards” feel for its members and partners. All in attendance were asked to be in formal attire and enjoyed appetizers and dinner meals compliments of the night’s hosts, NCB. All of 54 prospective members were inducted into the club while over 20 more individuals were present as returning members. It is safe to say members were treated for their loyalty, support and service to the club.
Following the club’s prominence at the UWI Student Awards, copping a high of 25 individual awards and arguably the most prestigious group award – The Most Vibrant Society Award – the club felt the need to award their members personally. Each inducted member received a certificate while sectional trophies and plaques were presented to standouts. The President’s Award, The Club Advisor Award as well as club spirit, leadership and service awards were happily received by outstanding members. Tokens were also presented for the club’s mentorship program, which was started to facilitate first-year student integration into the UWI culture. Incoming Public Relations Officer David Lord and final-year Marketing student Shavanie Dillon copped the most awards on the night (two each).
The club’s executive was praised by Darlene Jones of JIFS for its extensive work in enlightening the minds of UWI students. She reserved special praise for outgoing President Shawn-King Ferguson, for leading the executive team to successful completion of core objectives.
NCB’s Marcia Reid-Grant expressed her delight in working with the Banking League this year as she welcomed the incoming executive for the year 2016-2017. She also praised the club for launching the NCB Ambassador Program which was a major aspect of the partnership between both parties.
