Di Dakta, a year after
TONIGHT a new male and female Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall will be crowned. The finalists are princes Zigma and Accid, and princesses Clymaxx and Mi Ya Estro.
Last year’s male winner Devin Di Dakta, who shared the spotlight with Tripple A, has had a prolific year.
He reflected on his career since winning the title in 2015.
“The past year, musically, was like a learning process for me. I’m still young in this industry so moving forward, I will know what to do and what not to do,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
He recalled the moment when he was announced winner.
“It was an extraordinary and overwhelming feeling because I had put in so much hard work and it finally paid off,” said Devin Di Dakta, who was entering the competition for the second time.
“I entered when I was 15 at the Ocho Rios audition. After going through the preliminary rounds, I was told to come back when I was older. I used that time to really watch the competition and see where I could improve,” he said.
He said the major highlights for his career over the past year were: being featured on Sly and Robbie’s album Reggae Power 2; performing at the Bob Marley One Love Festival in February; and being nominated for two Youth View Awards.
Earlier this year, he was featured on Magnum Tonic Wine’s campaign #GoLouder. He was elated at the opportunity to be part of it.
“To be included in Magnum’s new campaign was an opportunity that I really appreciate and I am very delighted. It signified the hard work that is being done by me and my team is being recognised and accepted,” he said.
Since winning the competition, Devin Di Dakta has released several songs which have enjoyed fair radio rotation. Among his better known songs are RriBamBiDengDeng, Say Dem A Gyallis, Run Mi Dung, and his current hit Rev Out Di RR, featuring singer RR.
He is currently putting the final touches to a joint album featuring singer JL. The album is being produced by Taxi Records.
Quizzed as to his pick tonight, Devin Di Dakta was diplomatic in his response.
“I’m a two sided cutlass, I’m on both sides. May the best artiste win. I just want to tell them to prepare and do their best. Also, keep in mind that they are all winners,” he said.
