Protoje releases free project on birthday
Protoje has released a collection of songs dubbed Royalty Free, available for free download on his website. And he’s done it all on this his birthday.
Royalty Free starts out with Can’t Feel No Way, an eclectic mix of sounds that somehow works well together. It in fact showcases aptly why Protoje is often referred to as the face of the future of reggae music. Can’t Feel No Way shows that while Diggy believes in his work and the potency of his craft he doesn’t really feel no way about not winning a Grammy for his last album Ancient Future, and that he isn’t a sore loser. He talks about his Coachella experience and does a bit of social commentary on the track as well.Glad You’re Home is a ladies’ tune without being abrasive or explicit. Protoje manages to spit smooth but rapid fire lyrics over a chill beat and he offers some insight into what girls really want as he sings, “She nuh wan’ no fling, haffi get di real someting.”Flight Plans is largely an earnest plea for a lover to stay. And Used To Be My Life is a relaxed, reflective piece that maintains a joyous enough tune despite some slightly somber lyrics about a deceased friend.Royalty Free is a pretty great gift to fans. Happy birthday, Protoje. And thanks for the new tunes.
Next comes a more mellow ode to local former pageant queen Sandra Foster. Though the song named for the 1991 Miss Jamaica World winner mentions pageant queens turned politicians Lisa Hanna and Imani Duncan-Price, it isn’t just about those beautiful and enterprising ladies as Protoje weaves a story of yearning for an unnamed beauty that he wanted to make his life partner.
All in all,
