Maverley/Hughenden to strengthen squad ahead of RSPL, says coach Simms
After eking out the final promotion spot in the recently concluded Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Charley’s JB Rum Premier League play-offs, Maverley/Hughenden have returned to the proverbial drawing board to sketch plans for their historic Premier League campaign.
The KSAFA champions secured their spot in next season’s Red Stripe Premier League after finishing second in the four-team play-off standings with nine points ,which saw them winning twice, losing once and drawing three times.
Clarendon-based outfit Jamalco FC topped the standing with 16 points, with Brazil FC finishing third on eight points, and Granville United finishing at the foot without a point.
The dream of the Corporate Area team was realised in the final round of the play-offs when they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against fellow promoted outfit Jamalco at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Clarendon.
Head Coach Lij Simms was overwhelmed by the achievement of his team.
“Coming into the game I told my players we don’t need a point, we need to avoid defeat, and I told them that we have to stop Jamalco from playing. When we get the ball, we played to our game plan and we executed well for the most part and I am happy with the outcome,” he told the Jamaica Observer in a post-game interview.
“We are going to celebrate this one and then go back and meet with the management team to get plans in place for us going forward to ensure that we are on the right path heading into the Premier League,” he added.
Having now achieved the goal of now competing in the nation’s top-tier league, the Kingston 20 based team, which is said to be supported by Jamaican-born English striker Raheem Sterling, will now be aiming to add more ammunition to their firepower.
“We definitely intend to add players; Chelsea won the Barclays Premier League (two seasons ago) and they have made a lot of additions. So we will definitely be doing the same, we are looking for good players to strengthen our squad and we will just take it from there,” Simms explained.
Equipped with youth and experience, with the likes of Kasai Hinds, Locksley Thompson, Roberto Fletcher and Omari Edwards, among others, Simms believes with the additions to come, his team will possess the quality and ability to match up in the nation’s top flight.
“I am very confident because teamwork makes the dream work, and once we put in the work, we can only perform to the best of our ability and we intend to give of our best. Preparation is the key and once we are prepared then we will have nothing to fear, so we are not worried. We will just take it one step and one game at a time when we get to the league,” he noted.
