Nigel Ellis let down by 100m foul-up, but conquers 200m in style
Not even his powerful and commanding run in the 200m final on Sunday could soothe Nigel Ellis’s disappointment after he was disqualified from the 100m final on Saturday’s first day of the JAAA National Junior Championships at the National Stadium.
Ellis, who is ranked number two in the world in the junior men’s 100m (10.16 seconds) and fifth in the 200m (20.40 seconds), battled a strong headwind to win the 200m in 20.72 seconds (-3.6m/s), beating Akeem Bloomfield (21.06 seconds) and Hujaye Cornwall (21.30) to secure his place on the team to the July 19-24 championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
While expressing his relief at making the team, the STETHS athlete, who has been unbeaten in the 100m all year, could not hide his disappointment at not being able to run the short sprint.
“I am very disappointed that I did not win the 100m,” Ellis told reporters after the 200m victory. “I really would love to be able to run the 100m.”
In his absence, Raheem Chambers won the 100m on Saturday in 10.70 seconds (-1.8m/s) ahead of Jhevaughn Matherson (10.77 seconds) and Fabian Hewitt (10.80).
Ellis, who recently signed a professional contract with German sporting goods manufacturer Puma, said he was in shock when he was disqualified in the heats of the 100m on Saturday morning.
“At first, I did not believe it but had to accept it,” he said.
Ellis, who was drawn in lane four behind Bloomfield in lane five in the final of the 200m, said “the race was okay, I just listened to the coach and got the victory”.
