J’cans capture nine medals at C’bean swimming champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s swimmers made a big splash capturing nine medals on the opening day of the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) in the Bahamas on Wednesday.
The 24-member team which had 20 finalists, mined four gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
English-based swimmer Kelsie Campbell opened the door when she topped the girls’ 15-17 field in the 100m butterfly.
Keanan Dols followed suit in the boys’ 15-17 equivalent, before Olympic hopeful Timothy Wynter captured the country’s third gold on the night in the boys’ 18 & over 50m backstroke.
The other gold came courtesy of Simone Vale in the girls’ 11-12 100m butterfly, while Emily MacDonald also secured a bronze in the event.
Nicholas Vale also secured bronze in the boys’ 13-14 event and another Olympic hopeful Justin Plasckha copped silver in the boys’ 18 & over event.
Breanna Roman continued to show her prowess in the distant events as she won silver in the girls’ 18 & over 200m breaststroke.
MacDonald, the only double medal winner on the night returned to take silver in the girls’ 11-12 50m backstroke.
The Jamaicans will continue the hunt for more medals later this evening.
