Champions League player of the week
Champions League football is finally back. Matchday one of Champions League football definitely did not disappoint.
There were many standout players this week but there is only one CL player of the week. While most would give this title to Lionel Messi for scoring a hat-trick and helping Barcelona FC to demolish Celtic FC 7-0, the real MVP was Alvaro Morata.
Morata aided Cristiano Ronaldo in rescuing Real Madrid from sheer embarrassment by netting a goal in the 90+3′ minutes to give Los Blancos the 2-1 win over Sporting.
It is significant that it was Morata that scored the winning goal as he has been desperately trying to prove his worth to his club that had sold him once before. Morata almost owed Real Madrid this goal in Champions League because not too long ago his goal with Juventus helped to knock Real Madrid out of Champions League.
Alvaro wins the award because he did two things this week: proved himself and won Real Madrid three points.
