Clarendon derby
Former champions Arnett Gardens and UWI FC will both be seeking to register a third-consecutive victory when they renew their rivalry in the 2015/16 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season at the latter’s UWI Bowl, Mona base today at 3:30 pm.
In the early kick-off at 3:00 pm, leaders Humble Lion (12 points) will visit last year’s beaten finalists Portmore United, who are currently in seventh position on seven points, in a mouth-watering Clarendon derby at Juici Park.
The other matches scheduled to get underway at 3:30 pm will see promoted outfit Jamalco FC entertaining Reno FC; Montego Bay United welcoming Harbour View; Maverley/Hughenden opposing Boys’ Town FC; and Waterhouse hosting Tivoli Gardens.
There is very little to separate Arnett Gardens and UWI FC as both are coming off back-to-back victories and occupy second and third spot with 10 points each. However, Arnett Gardens, who are the more attacking of the two, hold a slightly better goal difference having netted five times and conceded twice to their opponents four and four.
After registering 1-0 and 2-0 over Harbour View and Portmore United, the “Junglists” will once again have to show up in good form in all facets in order to maintain their winning run, as the university team, coming off 2-1 and 1-0 scorelines over Tivoli Gardens and Reno FC, respectively, will come hunting for another scalp to continue their journey towards pole position.
Last season’s Clarendon derbies between Portmore United and Humble Lion were all thrillers, and this season is expected to be no different as both teams continue their battles at either end of the 12-team standings.
Humble Lion, coached by Donovan Duckie, are fresh from their 2-1 win over champions Montego Bay United, as well as 1-0 victories over Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse, and will be brimming with confidence to make it four-in-four.
But Portmore United, guided by former Reggae Boy captain Linval Dixon, though struggling to maintain a level of consistency, will be eager to resume winning ways and they can be very dangerous if allowed to break free.
Meanwhile, champions Montego Bay United, who are in fifth spot on nine points, will host cellar dwellers Harbour View (three points) at Wespow Park. Montego Bay United are currently six points and seven places better than the East Kingston team and will be seeking to throw salt in their wounds in order to resume winning ways.
The Ludlow Bernard-coached Harbour View have been struggling to find their groove, having so far lost four of their five games with a victory coming in a 2-1 scoreline against Boys Town. But the fairly young squad will be aiming to snap an extended losing skid and will be confident of surprising their more fancied opponents.
Clarendon’s Jamalco, in their first season of top-flight football, have acquitted themselves well and are currently fourth in the table with nine points after impressive 3-0 wins over UWI and Waterhouse, and a come-from-behind 3-2 win over fellow promoted team Maverley/Hughenden, in that order.
After getting their wings clipped in a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Boys’ Town, Jamalco will have to make quick assessments in repairing the damage as they are expected to face another stern test against eighth-placed Reno FC (seven points) at Wembley Centre of Excellence.
However, the Westmoreland-based Reno FC are also in renovation mode and are desperate for a win following two consecutive losses which initiated their steady drop from pole position down the table. They will be fighting to regain some degree of confidence, but more importantly, to stay in close quarters with the leaders.
After finally gaining their first points in a 1-0 win over Jamalco on last, 11th-placed Boys’ Town (three points) will be hoping to maintain the winning trend against Corporate Area new boys Maverley Hughenden, who are ninth with six points at Constant Spring Field.
Though it is still early days yet, victory will be critical for both teams to stay within touching distance of a favourable position.
Another team that will be aiming to make it two-in-two are 10th-placed Waterhouse (three points), who will be at home to sixth-placed Tivoli Gardens (seven points), who will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
