Dominica lawmakers to discuss Bail Act amendments
ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) — The Dominican Parliament will tomorrow debate the amendment to the Bail Act to take into consideration concerns being raised by various stakeholders, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said.
He told a news conference over the weekend that his Administration will be tabling the amendments to the existing legislation to deal with a number of concerns raised, not only by members of the legal profession.
“There has always been concern by the legal fraternity about bail and on what matters should be considered and how they should be considered… when a request for bail is made to the courts.
“We are seeking to define it much more clearly for the courts… in how we treat with bail, particularly in connection with criminal proceedings in Dominica,” Skerrit told reporters.
He said there have been concerns that “for serious crimes, people get bail and they are back on the streets and the residents have been raising concerns about this.
“I think it is an effort by the Government in responding to concerns,” he said.
Skerrit also said that legislators will debate amendments to the Sexual Offences Act during the sitting tomorrow.
