Bobby Shmurda’s fall from grace
AMERICAN rapper Bobby Shmurda was sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday, having pleaded guilty in connection with a 2014 incident in which the New York City police charged him with conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession, and reckless endangerment.
However, Shmurda, whose given name is Ackquille Jean Pollard, rejected a previously agreed plea deal, telling Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Abraham Clott that his lawyer forced him to accept the deal.
“I was forced to take this sentence. I don’t want to take this sentence,” Shmurda told the judge as his flustered lawyer Alex Spiro stood beside him.
“I want to drop my plea.”
The rapper then addressed his lawyer directly: “I want to drop my plea and fire you … Why are you telling me to waive my rights? I am not waiving my rights.”
The judge rejected Spiro’s request for a three-week delay in imposing sentence. “I don’t see any reason for an adjournment,” Clott declared.
The 22-year-old artiste, who has a Jamaican father and Trinidadian mother, is best known for his hit track Hot Nigga which features deejay Popcaan.
According to reports, in the original plea deal, established nearly two years ago, Shmurda pleaded guilty to fourth-degree conspiracy to criminally possess a weapon and second-degree criminal weapons possession.
That deal was reached days before the rapper stood trial for multiple crimes stemming from a massive, multi-person indictment alleging that Shmurda was the ringleader of GS9, an offshoot of the infamous Los Angeles gang, The Crips.
Distributed by Epic Records, Hot Nigga was his biggest hit with its accompanying Shmoney Dance. It got the attention of Canadian rapper Drake who performed the song during his set at the 2014 ESPY Awards.
There is also a reggae version of Hot Nigga featuring Junior Reid, Mavado, Popcaan and Jah X.
