A Splendid version of Big Bamboo
Splendid temporarily strays from his dancehall roots to cover the risque calypso classic, Big Bamboo.
The Toronto-based deejay’s version is co-produced by Daley Works Entertainment and DJ Jango. It was released in July but has got renewed energy through a music video which came out last week.
Big Bamboo is a Caribbean staple. It has been recorded by Lord Creator, The Mighty Sparrow, Lord Antics and the Lyons band, The Merrymen and The Mighty Panther.
“The first time I heard this song it grabbed my attention. The lyrics are clever, and the vocal delivery and musical accompaniment are excellent. I like to challenge myself so I decided to do a version of this classic tune and give it a new a flavour,” said Splendid. “If you listen to my version you will realise that it has a reggae-salsa vibe.”
Directed by Chris Daley, the video was filmed in Havana and Varadero, Cuba.
Splendid, whose real name is Alphonso Jones was born and raised in Charles Town, St Ann. He has lived in Toronto since 2000.
He launhed his recording career in 2002 with the song, Down Low.
