Jamalco win battle of promoted teams, clip Maverley 2-1
Two second-half goals carried Jamalco FC to a 2-1 victory over Maverley/Hughenden FC in their Red Stripe Premier League encounter at the Constant Spring Football Field on Sunday.
Andre Dawson scored in the 53rd minute and Roshane Sharpe in the 66th for Jamalco, while Nicholas Scott got the lone goal for Maverley/Hughenden in the second minute.
The victory ended the Clarendon-based outfit’s five-game losing streak as they moved out of the relegation zone to ninth position on 13 points ahead of their opponents (13 points-10th position) on goal difference in the standing.
It was the second time that Jamalco were getting the better of Maverley/Hughenden this season as the former defeated their rivals 3-2 in the first round at their home field.
Under overcast conditions, the battle between the two promoted outfits finally got under way 10 minutes after the scheduled 3:00 pm start, and immediately, the home team began to celebrate through a Scott strike in the second minute of play.
Scott received a wonderful cross from Roberto Fletcher on the right flank and easily slotted home past Levar Williams in goal for Jamalco.
Jamalco then took control of the rest of the first half and should have answered with at least three goals, but their attacking unit squandered numerous opportunities that should have been easily put away without minimum fuss.
Dawson was the first as he latched on to a fumbled ball inside the 18-yard box, but watched his shot slammed into the right upright in the eighth minute with goalkeeper Damian Campbell nowhere in sight for the home team.
Dawson was at it again four minutes later when he got a through ball and was left to beat Campbell in the Maverley/Hughenden goal, and instead of firing on either sides of Campbell, Dawson instead fired straight at his target in a poor effort. Another easy opportunity came in the 21st minute when Kenroy Thomas was denied by the crossbar from close-up.
After the resumption, Jamalco went straight on the attack and found the equaliser after Dawson made no mistake this time and powered a low shot past Campbell in Maverley/Hughenden goal in the 53rd minute.
A double substitution almost paid dividends for the home team as Andrew Whyte, who came on for Wayne Williams in the 62nd minute, with his first touch of the game, was denied by a good effort from Williams in Jamalco goal.
Immediately, Jamalco responded and went ahead in the 66th minute through Sharpe, who, in his second attempt from the penalty spot, managed to get the ball in the back of the net as Campbell dived the wrong way.
Maverley/Hughenden threw everything at their opponents in the dying stages of the game, but it was too little too late as Jamalco hung on for the slim win.
