Dream lives on
Seeking My Dream is now truly be-studded by diamonds when, in what can only be described as an unforgettable performance for the ages, the four-year-old chestnut colt won the rich Diamond Mile for the second time, making it a perfect two-from-two for owner Derrick Smith, trainer Wayne DaCosta, jockey Omar Walker, and groom Linval McFarlane.
The Diamond Mile, sponsored by the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission, Supreme Ventures Limited and Caymans Track Limited, had its second staging yesterday at a packed Caymanas Park.
There were doubts coming into the race as many wrote off the chances of Seeking My Dream after he was absent from the Gold Cup in September and was barely around in the Superstakes in November.
A noticeable change in training regime by DaCosta, allied with his undeniable class and a perfect trip, saw Seeking My Dream not only mine ‘diamonds’ once more, but firmly place him on the pedestal as certainly the best horse currently racing in Jamaica and one of the best overall.
“I was confident coming into the race. The win wasn’t unexpected, it was very much expected. This victory, however, confirmed that I have the best middle- distance horse in the country.
Seeking My Dream came back in the exact time that he ran last year, which shows that he is a genuine horse. I am very much happy with the victory as he is a very wonderful and talented horse.
“Wayne DaCosta deserves every possible credit for bringing Seeking My Dream to the Diamond Mile in the best possible condition, while Walker must be congratulated for a well-executed ride and, of course, there is “Pickins” (Linval McFarlane), the groom of Seeking My Dream who worked tireless to prepare him ,” said owner Derrick Smith.
After another Diamond Mile success, DaCosta was humbled by the talent of his horse.
“I thought winning the first Diamond Mile was great, but this victory here today (yesterday) was even greater. Two times in a row is just wonderful; it is history and quite an achievement, and one which I will cherish forever.
“I mean, Seeking My Dream rose to the occasion on the big day and delivered. I am proud of him and the team at the stables that made it possible,” the champion trainer said.
There was great anxiety and loud shouts in the stands when starter Michael Simms opened the gates and let the 16 runners go, and it did not take long for the various race plans to fan out.
Buzz Nightmare went for the lead, with stable companion Campesino nearby along with Jamai Raja.Seeking My Dream was held off the fractions by Walker in mid-pack.
The tempo quickened leaving the five-furlong marker as Buzz Nightmare (Shane Ellis) accelerated and em>Campesino kept tracking, with Jamai Raja looking ominously good. Walker kept Seeking My Dream off the pace, gently going down, but without making that final move.
Two-and-a-half furlongs out, Seeking My Dream moved to the outside as Buzz Nightmare, Campesino and Jamai Raja and entered the straight fighting for ‘diamond’ supremacy. At one stage it appeared an upset was on the cards as Jamai Raja (Bebeto Harvey) was going well. Then in one fell swoop Seeking My Dream exploded and went by, in emphatic fashion to win, going away by five lengths. Bigdaddykool, who was never with the front-runners, ended in second with Houdini’s Magic third. With splits of 23.4. 47.0 and 1:10.4 for a final time of 1:36.2, Seeking My Dream was able to equal his own Stakes record of 1:36.2 minutes.
Walker was filled with happiness after the race.
“The feeling is really great to have won the Diamond Mile. This is not only the first but the second, and I am a very happy man at the moment.
“This horse is a very good racehorse and his performance today (yesterday) was exceptional and I can tell you, I love this horse,” he said.
