Fitz Jackson to meet with Bankers Association re banking fees
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Member of Parliament for South St Catherine, Fitz Jackson says he will be meeting with the Jamaica Bankers Association to address concerns raised by bankers in relation to the Bill he initiated in Parliament to amend the Banking Services Act.
In a release from the People’s National Party (PNP) Secretariat, Jackson says he will be meeting with the bankers, but he remains “committed to ensuring that the interests of the depositors are protected.”
The meeting which will take place at the Parliament building on Monday, January 30, is expected to have in attendance the president of the JBA along with the heads of Jamaica’s major banks.
On Tuesday the House of Representatives started debating a private member’s motion brought by Opposition MP Jackson to give the Bank of Jamaica control over the fees and charges customers have to pay from commercial banking services.
Among the Bill’s critics is the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), which on Wednesday said that it is concerned with the proposals to amend the Banking Services Act to regulate price setting in banks, and viewed it as a retrograde step where the State could return to pricing controls.
