FLA to audit JRA; ministry orders unopened lockers cleared
KINGSTON, Jamaica — National Security Minister, Robert Montague, yesterday ordered that unopened lockers at the Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) should be cleared by March 21 and the Firearm’s Licensing Authority (FLA) is to conduct an audit of the organisation.
Montague yesterday held a meeting with the executive of the JRA, which was also attended by the Acting CEO of FLA, amidst recent concerns about JRA’s operational structure.
Currently, the internal policies of the JRA do not allow access to the lockers of its members by any authority, including the FLA, according to a release from the ministry.
The minister emphasised the need for increased accountability, noting that an audit of the JRA is to be conducted by the FLA and that by-laws are to be established to allow the FLA to access JRA members’ lockers.
The minister said this forms part of the general audit of all the ranges across the island, which falls within the authority of the FLA and the broader mandate of the Ministry of National Security to create a safer Jamaica.
