Jacqueline Cummings is new Jamaican Bar Association head
JACQUELINE Cummings was last weekend elected as the new president of the Jamaican Bar Association at the organsiation’s annual general meeting.
Cummings, who was the association’s treasurer, succeeds Sherry-Ann McGregor, who did not seek re-election after her successful term in office.
Stuart Stimpson was re-elected to serve as vice-president for a second term, while the newly elected members to the Bar Council are: Valerie Neita Robertson QC; Alexander Williams; Tamika Harris; and Alexis Robinson.
Cummings, an attorney for 25 years, admitted to practise in Jamaica and Guyana, has served as a member of the association’s council since 2005. She also serves as chairman of the Legal Aid Board and as a member of the Parish Court Rules Committee.
A founding partner in the firm Archer Cummings & Co, Cummings maintains a civil litigation and criminal law practice. With her husband Neil Gordon-Martin, they have one daughter, Alexis.
The new president vowed to continue the association’s efforts to agitate for the independence of the judiciary, and advocate for the reopening of the debate in Parliament on adopting the Caribbean Court of Justice as Jamaica’s final appellate court.
