PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — The football fraternity here have paid their condolences to outstanding former national striker, Stern John, following the death of his teenage daughter.

The 19-year-old Nikela died at her home in Cunupia in central Trinidad on Thursday, but the cause of death is yet to be determined.

Media reports here said John, the assistant senior team coach, was on his way to national practice to prepare for Friday’s international friendly against Barbados, when he was informed Nikela was unwell.

He then quickly returned home but she subsequently died.

Trinidad and Tobago FA president, David John-Williams, offered the organisation’s full support to John’s family.

“This is indeed a difficult time for him and his family as well as our TTFA family,” John-Williams said.

“As president I will like to urge Stern to stay strong. Words are difficult to find at this time to say to him. We ask for God’s blessings upon him at this time and may she rest in peace.”

As a mark of respect, there was a minute’s silence prior to the start of Friday’s game at the Ato Boldon Stadium, with both teams also wearing black armbands throughout the contest.

Newly-appointed head coach Dennis Lawrence, who played alongside John during his national career, said the grief would be shared by all.

“We want to extend our condolences to Stern and his family and also let him know that we have him in our thoughts and we share in this time of grief with him,” said Lawrence.

“We know that no amount of words can really help to ease the pain he is bearing but we pray that the comfort of God helps him and his family through this difficult time.

“Stern is one of us and we will give him the time and support he needs right now and welcome him back at the appropriate time.”

English championship club, Birmingham City, with whom John spent a couple of seasons, also sent their condolences.
