Wheatley says Jamaica made big reduction in CO2 emission
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, says that Jamaica has been recording a significant reduction in CO2 emission.
“Wigton operations from 2004-2016, has seen a cut in CO2 emission by 800,000 metric tonnes,” he told last week’s second Central American and Caribbean Renewable Energy Congress, RECAM 2017 in Panama City.
He said that Jamaica is considered among the regional leaders in comprehensive energy assessment and planning, and is seeking to develop a culture of energy efficiency and conservation as it moves towards creating “smart cities”.
“Colleagues, the 2016 award by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of Best Government Infrastructure Strategy, is but one clue that tells us we are on the right path to securing clean and safe energy as we pursue growth, development and prosperity,” Wheatley said.
The minister added that he looked forward to continuing dialogue with green energy practioners and government officials attending the conference.
Wheatley also received the Central American and Caribbean Renewable Energy Congress (RECAM) 2017 Renewables Champion of the Year Award.
A news release from his ministry said that the minister was one of two nominees in this category. The other nominee was Faro Energy, a company focused on bringing “international capital and solar experience to emerging markets.”
