Coopers Pen, Baca Star in hunt for mid-season final spots
COOPERS PEN, Trelawny — Coopers Pen and Baca Star United remained in the hunt for places in the mid-season final of the Trelawny Football Association Monymusk Plantation Rum Major League with wins on Saturday.
Desron Whyne scored two goals for Coopers Pen in their 3-0 win over Invaders SC in their Zone One game at Coopers Pen, while Baca Star United edged Daniel Town 1-0 in Zone Two.
In another game, Duanvale FC kept in close proximity to Baca Star United, as they also won 1-0 over Granville FC.
Harmony FC, however, lost some ground after their first defeat of the season as Salt Marsh United avenged their first-round loss with a 4-1 win on Sunday.
Coopers Pen lead Zone One with 22 points, three more than Harmony FC, while Baca Star United are on 20 points in Zone Two, three clear of Duanvale FC, both from eight games.
At Coopers Pen, the home team were out of the blocks quickly and led 2-0 after just six minutes with goals from Shaunavan McKenzie in the first minute and Whyne in the sixth.
Whyne then added a second in the 21st minute as they beat the promoted Invaders SC for a second time after a 4-2 margin in the first round.
Theodore Hopwood’s 75th-minute goal was enough for Baca Star United who had won the first round game 6-1, while at Duanvale, Lansford Parkinson scored in the 51st minute to give the home team all three points over Granville FC.
On Sunday, Anthony Knuckle scored two late goals to carry Salt Marsh over the line against Harmony FC and moved to 14 points, eight clear of fourth place and to within five of second place.
Romario Murray and Ramone Brown gave Salt Marsh United a 2-0 half-time lead before Troy Smith pulled one back for Harmony FC in the 57th minute.
Knuckle, however, restored Salt Marsh United’s two-goal lead in the 80th minute then added another in the 87th minute.
