Weekly Round-up: Kartel gets appeal nod… PNP rips budget… Telephone tax approved
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Incarcerated entertainer Vybz Kartel and his three co-accused were, on Wednesday, granted leave to appeal their conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal.See link for stories below:
Kartel, given name Adidja Palmer; Kahira Jones; Andre St John; and entertainer Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell hope to have their sentences for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard Williams’ overturned.
Thomas Tavares-Finson, attorney for Vybz Kartel, described the development as an “important step in the appeal process”.
Meanwhile, the People’s National Party this week scolded the Government over its $13.5 billion tax package, which it blamed on the $1.5 million income tax break.
Opposition spokesman on finance Dr Peter Phillips on Tuesday told the Andrew Holness administration to change its “disastrous” policies and “wheel and come again”, warning Jamaicans to brace for more taxes.
Then on Thursday, outgoing PNP leader Portia Simpson Miller chastised the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) for what she called reckless campaign promises, resulting in Jamaicans having to pay for the Government’s “political expediency”.
In other news, legislation was passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday, giving legal authority to the Government to collect taxes imposed on certain telephone calls since 2012.
