Ja Invitational: Elaine wins 200m, compatriot Jackson second
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson stamped her credentials as the overwhelming favourite for the double at the World Championships when she clocked a comfortable 22.09 seconds to win the women’s 200m at the 14th staging of the Jamaica International Invitational meet at the National Stadium a short while ago.
Thompson, running from lane five, went out hard and was in full control coming into the straight before pulling away in commanding fashion to establish the new meet record and joint fastest time in the world this year.The 24-year-old MVP Track Club representative lowered the previous meet record of 22.14 seconds set by Sherone Simpson in 2006 and was equalled by Shaunae Miller of The Bahamas in 2015.She won ahead of compatriot and club mate Shericka Jackson, who closed well for second in 22.61, while American Shalonda Solomon (22.64) was third.Sherdon Cowan
