KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Traffic Division is reporting the issuance of 233,309 traffic tickets from the beginning of the year to the period ending June 9.

The JCF in a news release today stated that this is an increase of 40,048 tickets, 21 per cent more when compared to the same period last year and more than 8000 summons were also issued.

“In a joint operation with the Island Traffic Authority 3,250 registration plates were removed from motor vehicles and trucks. 4,060 motor vehicles operating against the law were seized, this is 50 more than last year and 10,200 people were prosecuted for illegal tinting of vehicles,” the JCF explained.

They added that of the 233,309 tickets that were issued, more than 8,800 were for failure to wear seat belts while driving and more than 2,300 issued for failing to wear protective helmets while riding a motorcycle.

The police force said in excess of $13 million has been collected from the execution of warrants and more than 1,300 people arrested during traffic enforcement duties.

Additionally, 33,391 spot checks were conducted, stopping 417,000 vehicles and searching 500,000 people. During these operations 1,260 offensive weapons were also seized.
